Suzuki Beane

Suzuki Beane - 1962 Television Pilot - Edited
Desilu Studios adapted the popular children's book - a satire of Kay Thompson's "Eloise" series - into a TV pilot, which ultimately did not find a sponsor. This shortened version eventually aired with another recycled pilot and some new material with Lucille Ball and Gale Gordon as part of the "Victor Borge Comedy Theater."

Suzuki Beane is a humor book written in 1961 by Sandra Scoppettone and illustrated by Louise Fitzhugh. The novel is a downtown satire on Kay Thompson's Eloise series (1956-59).  (Thanks, Duplex Planet)

Birthmark - Shaking Hands

Birthmark is the solo project of Chicago-based musician and composer Nate Kinsella (of Make Believe and Joan of Arc). Nate wrote and recorded the second Birthmark album, Shaking Hands, over a 3-year period. Evidence of Nate’s songwriting process of recording, editing, and re-recording can be heard in the album’s first two songs, which play as mirror images of each other. After amassing several hard drives of music, Nate finally decided to give himself a deadline to complete the album. He chose the songs that appear on the album from a list of many— more for their differences from each other than for their similarities. The result is Shaking Hands, named after a Birthmark song that didn’t make it onto the album.

"Shaking Hands" is available now via A Hidden Agenda Record.

Matt Friedberger's Solos series

Matthew Friedberger - Shirley

Matthew Friedberger (the Fiery Furnaces' male half) will release 6 solo albums in 2011.  The albums will be released every two months (Jan, March, May, July, Sept, Nov) via Thrill Jockey. 'Shirley' is taken from its first release, piano album "Napoleonette" out on January 25th.  In March its guitar album "Meet Me in Miramasas" recorded in France will follow as the second album. The last one with 2 exclusive full-length bonus albums features Matt and special guests on each.  Subscribers will also get an old-style "Tip On" LP box with a hand mounted photo in their last shipment. This edition is strictly limited to 700 subscriptions worldwide and will not be available digitally or on compact disc in its complete form.

His 6+2 record set, Solos in which he plays only a single given instrument per album (though not necessarily the same actual individual example of the single given instrument), is designed to illustrate the following Cretan-Lacedaemonian principle. Every group of instruments against every other group of instruments; every instrument against every other instrument; and especially, every instrument against itself, all alone. See Laws, Book 1, 626 d. This idea jibes quite well with certain notions that have often been thought constitutively American, no doubt unfortunately. Friedberger thinks it therefore illuminating to apply this principle to such a pre-eminently American music as the aforementioned R-n-R. Despite the fact that this application is no doubt already ongoing.

His new solo material will be on the way in early 2011.

katya-oddio: The Underappreciated Kinderklavier (via FMA / Oddio Overplay)

The toy piano is historically more than just a plaything. Quality toy pianos stay in tune, because they do not employ strings. Toy pianos offer a unique timbre unlike a piano and more like a celesta or a member of the harpsichord family. It is this unusual sound has been the key appeal to a small number of composers and performers through the centuries.

Lofty Deeds © Jon Langford, 2006

“Rock and roll remains one of the last honorable callings,
and a working band is a miracle of everyday life.”
—Thomas Pynchon

Political provocateurs. Social agitators. Punk’s reigning contrarians. The Mekons have been called all this and more. Formed in the tumultuous wake of the Sex Pistols by a co-ed group of radical art students from Leeds, England, the Mekons are the only Year Zero British punk band to survive with its core members intact. Left for dead by the mid-’80s, the band re-emerged as rabble-rousing progeny of Hank Williams, a development that inspired journalists to coin the term alt country. Since then, reinvention has been the group’s modus operandi. Over the course of a 31-year (and counting) career, the Mekons have redefined the meaning of a band: Its members are prolific artists who have created — collectively, individually or in collaboration with others — paintings, sculptures, theater pieces, even a group novel. As such, the Mekons function as a loose-knit art collective.
