Jessie Baylin "Pleasure Center" EP

Jessie Baylin - I Couldn't Say It To Your Face (Arthur Russell cover)

Jessie Baylin - Storms (Fleetwood Mac cover)

Born in Gillette, New Jersey, a Nashville based singer/songwriter, Jessie Baylin has released a free 5-track EP "Pleasure Center" last month, it was recorded at home in her living room with the help of Richard Swift. "Pleasure Center" collects her covers of Sonic Youth ('Little Trouble Girl'), Arthur Russell ('I Couldn't Say It To Your Face'), Fleetwood Mac ('Storms'), and Thin Lizzy ('A Song For While I’m Away'), except her own composition 'White Noise.' Available via her soundcloud site, HERE.

“I drew a lot from people like Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick, the Brill Building writers. But I didn’t want to make a retro, throwback kind of album. Nostalgia is fine, I have a definite fondness for that, but I didn’t want people to listen and think I was trying to recapture something from the past.”

Jessie Baylin's forthcoming third full-length "Little Spark," will be released on January 17th, 2012 via Blonde Rat. It was produced by Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) last fall at Fairfax Recordings, and features so many guest musicians like Waddy Wachtel, Jim Keltner, Greg Leisz, The Watson Twins and Jimmie Haskell..... and Richard Swift (who played most of the instruments) as the album's chief arranger.

In any event, this tape from originally released as a tour tape back in 2010 but was mysteriously lost at Cleveland’s Believeland space. Young Dreams

"Animal Collective will be the kneejerk comparison – though Young Dreams has only heard a few of the band’s songs – but the band’s influences go deeper than those of their Brooklyn peers. “I'm a big fan of the harmonies and arrangements of the romantic period of classical music,” says Tellez. “I love composers like Edvard Grieg and Stravinsky. But I’m also heavily inspired by people like [lounge music pioneer] Martin Denny and [Argentine composer] Waldo de los Rios.”

Expectations - single version by Young Dreams

Young Dreams, led by composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Matias Tellez, is a 12-piece Norwegian Dream/Tropical Pop collective, and a recent signee to Modular People. Their debut album will be released sometime in 2012 via Modular Recordings. The first two 7" singles from Télle Records are also available on Flake Records (Japan). The band features his brother Pablo and various members from Casiokids, The Megaphonic Thrift and Bloody Beach.

"America Salutes The Carter Family"

"The music on this cassette is the product of over two years of face-to-face recordings I collected from various regions of the country. About one-third of the artists here represent the Pacific Northwest, where I have been living over the past five years or so. I chose the Carter Family as the focus of the project mostly because their music is the foundation of American songwriting." ---Markly Morrison

"America Salutes The Carter Family," 30-track, 93-minute cassette which was compiled and recorded by Markly Morrison (Skrill Meadow, LAKE, Lazer Zeppelin), will soon be available on cassette via K Records, or now available digitally through the bandcamp.

Some Crazy Magic: Meeting Harry Smith

My New animation based around a story told to me by John Cohen when I interviewed him with Greg Vandy. From wikipedia: Harry Everett Smith (May 29 , 1923, Portland, Oregon – November 27, 1991, New York City) was an American archivist, ethnomusicologist, student of anthropology, record collector, experimental filmmaker, artist, bohemian and mystic. People who know his work as a filmmaker are often unfamiliar with his 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music, while folk music enthusiasts often do not know he was acclaimed as being "the greatest living magician" according to filmmaker, Kenneth Anger. ---Drew Christie
