"ARE WE NOT MEN?" Devo Documentary

"ARE WE NOT MEN?"
Official DEVO Documentary: 5-minute Previe
Kickstarter for a Devo documentary, HERE.

Produced in cooperation with DEVO, this authorized feature-length documentary has been in development for 3 years. Although the band has been notoriously secretive for nearly 4 decades, they granted us unprecedented full-access to their personal inner-workings and daily lives while on the road, backstage, and at home. Featuring new interviews with contemporaries (Iggy Pop), and fans (Dave Grohl, Tony Hawk), the official film reveals the truth about this important and misunderstood band. From their mysterious origins during the 1970 Kent State shootings to their latest album and tours, this film tells the funny and fascinating story of de-evolution.

"Rhino Resurrected" Needs One Last Push!
(Rhino Records Doc: 77 min.)
by Keith Shapiro / Kickstarter page, HERE.

"Go to Rhino Records on Westwood Boulevard…” – Wild Man Fischer.

“Rhino Resurrected”is the iconoclastic story of a ramshackle little record store that became a hub of hardcore music misfits, a launching pad for influential music careers, and a groundbreaking and irreverent record label revered by music lovers worldwide. The inspiration for the film came last spring when the founder of Rhino, Richard Foos, opened a “pop-up” record store that aimed to re-create the “Rhino” vibe and quickly turned into a celebration of and elegy for a music culture that’s all but lost. The film features killer live performances from Richard Thompson, Mike Watt, Peter Case, Little Willie G and thee Midnighters, Dr. Demento, Temple City Kazoo Orchestra and so much more – it’s a must see for any music fan!

The Sea and Cake - Harps

The Sea and Cake - Harps

"I was interested in writing songs that started not with guitar but with synthesizer/sequencer ideas. The modular synth parts didn't always make it through to the final recordings, but the influence is still there. On "Harps" for instance, that melody and structure could not have happened if I hadn't played off the sequencer right at the beginning. Having the pieces start in my home studio, I became quite cavalier with them, painting with a new fat sloppy brush. The songs were feeling pleasantly out of control and I was hearing music unlike other material I had come up with before."  --Sam Prekop

Listen to a brand new song 'Harps' off of The Sea And Cake‘s forthcoming 10th full-length album "Runner" which began as the companion piece to 2011's "The Moonlight Butterfly." Songs were designed in synthesizer experiments at Sam Prekop's home studio were reimagined by the other members, and eventually recorded and mixed by John McEntire at Chicago’s Soma Studios. Due out on September 18th via Thrill Jockey, September 5th via Commons (Japan).

"Ever wanted to hear what Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pavement, Guided By Voices, Terry Riley and Steve Reich would sound like if their DNA's were extracted, blended and re-grown as a single entity, given some cheap recording gear and been forced to record an album in a mad scientists filthy lab with really high ceilings? Just hit 'Play'."

The Mountain Goats - Cry for Judas

cover art by Aeron Alfrey

The Mountain Goats - Cry for Judas

"This here album track, anyway, is called "Cry for Judas," it is about survival but that's kind of an oversimplification, it's also about building a vehicle from the defeated pieces of the thing you survived and piloting that vehicle through the cosmos, it's kind of complicated but people who know what I'm talking about will kind of intuitively get the idea and the rest of you will I hope be able to get a sense of it through the song."

Here's the first single 'Cry for Judas' off of The Mountain Goats' forthcoming album, their 14th studio album "Transcendental Youth," due out on October 2nd via Merge Records, also available around the same time via Tomlab (UK & Europe) and Moorworks (Japan). Old Smile - Statues

Old Smile is a solo project by Tom Herman Jr. formerly known as a co-leader of Philly psych-rock outfit Arches. And he has recently released Old Smile’s first full-length album "Hearing Static" which was recorded by himself using one mic and his laptop with a 40 minutes long family jams tape recorded by his family. "Hearing Static" (released July 5th, 2012) is available now on Old Smile’s bandcamp.

Old Smile - Hearing Static

"The saxophone on Quiet Nights, Passing By, and Hearing Static was played by my grandfather.  He wasn't there to record it (he's deceased) but I found a tape of him playing with my father on drums and someone on guitar.  When my parents were younger, they used to get together with friends and family and have these jazz jams, drink and hang out.  The tape was 40 minutes long and very quiet so it took me a while to get the saxophone to stand out and match everything.  On the song "Hearing Static," the cymbals in the beginning of the song are from my dad playing drums, and the chatter is from my parents' and grandparents' friends when they were all younger."  --Tom Herman Jr.

The Music Tapes - The Dark Is Singing Songs

The Music Tapes - The Dark Is Singing Songs (Sleepy Time Down South)

Listen to the first track “The Dark Is Singing Songs (Sleepy Time Down South)” from the forthcoming third full-length "Mary’s Voice" by The Music Tapes, due out on September 4th via Merge Records. The Music Tapes is an experimental pop music project of Elephant 6 member Julian Koster also known as a key member of Neutral Milk Hotel, a contributor to The Olivia Tremor Control, and the earlier Chocolate U.S.A.. Pre-order, HERE

"Mary's Voice," the follow up to 2008's acclaimed "Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes," is part one of a planned two-part album and inaugurates a newly active phase in The Music Tapes' evolution-with plans to tour the world in a circus tent later this year and an NPR radio serial in the works. It was recorded with The Music Tapes' signature method of using recording machines of both past (early 1900s, '30s, '40s, '60s) and present to achieve a timeless sound. In Koster's own words: "I love sentimental melodies that you can hum with feeling. People warn against sentimentalizing or mythologizing the past. It's any failure to mythologize the present that I think we have to be afraid of. This is a miracle. You are a miracle. Our lives are magic, and our times all the more so. Music proves it." --Merge Records

"On A Steady Diet of Hash, Bread & Salt"

Daniel Padden - Adinatisa O Kaymenos (originally by A. Kostis)

Amen Dunes - Sousta Politiki (originally by Antonis Dalgas)

"Rebetika, a truly underground music created at the beginning of the 20th century, was, in its preamble form, the music vehicle to express a culture bumbling under a constantly changing society – a culture based on drugs, haunted by poverty. Unfortunately, in its birth land Greece, Rebetika was transformed through the decades, became soft and gradually deteriorated to a stupid folklore music consumed by the neogreek unmusical masses and tourists alike. For us, early 20s – late 30s Rebetika represents the rawest, purest and yet finest form of Greek folk music ever recorded. We regard this music as lyrically powerful, sentimentally resourceful and musically chaste as the blues." -- SOUNDEYET, Greece

Stream the album in its entirety on the Soundeyet bandcamp.

Brute Force (the movie)

"Brute Force" (2012), trailer
Director: Ben Steinbauer

In 1967, Brute Force had just released his first album on Columbia Records and was on the brink of becoming a star. The Beatles championed his next single, "King of Fuh," to be released on Apple Records. But dreams of fame and fortune quickly turned into nightmares when the record was censored and permanently shelved. In 2010, Sony and Apple reissued Brute Force's controversial music from the sixties, giving him another chance to re-capture his dreams of rock stardom.

"...... the "Fuh King" lives on and so does Brute Force, with the October 2010 reissue of his legendary 1967 Columbia LP "Confections of Love" featuring "King of Fuh" as a bonus track (Bar/None) and "Winnebago Man" director Ben Steinbauer (via Razor Films) currently in production of a documentary about Brute's life and work. And the icing on this beautiful birthday cake (Brute just turned 70), is the release of Apple Corps "Come and Get It, The Best of Apple" CD which includes Brute Force's "King of Fuh" along with other great Apple stars like James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, and Billy Preston."
