Tape – The Wild Palms

Tape – The Wild Palms

'The Wild Palms' is taken from the 5th studio album "Revelationes" by Swedish Trio Tape, co-released from Immune Recordings with Häpna.  It is their first since 2008’s "Luminarium" and the follow-up to their collaboration LP with Bill Wells.

Swedish trio Tape was formed in 2000 by brothers Andreas and Johan Berthling with Tomas Hallonsten. Taking cues both from pop, experimentalism, and minimalism their sound has become recognized internationally and is clearly something of its own. Their first album Opera was released on the Häpna imprint (which Johan is a co-owner of) in 2002. Working intuitive, all by themselves, they created mini symphonies out of electronic sounds paired with a stunning melodic lyricism. With an array of electronic and acoustic instruments at hand they have gone on to release three additional full length albums (Milieu, Rideau, and Luminarium). In 2006 they collaborated with Japanese duo Tenniscoats for their album Tan-Tan Therapy. The same year they recorded in Tokyo with Japanese quartet Minamo for the album Birds of a Feather. Tape have performed worldwide, playing shows in Japan, China, Taiwan, and tours of Europe and the US. Since Luminarium was released in 2008 the band have been diligently recording in their Summa Studio in Stockholm. The results of their labor is the new album "Revelationes".    (Immune Recordings)

Original title:
Ue o Muite Arukou (I Look Up as I Walk)
written by Rokusuke Ei - Hachidai Nakamura

I look up as I walk
So that the tears won't fall
Remembering those spring days
But I am all alone tonight

I look up as I walk
Counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those summer days
But I am all alone tonight

Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies up above the sky

I look up as I walk
So that the tears won't fall
Though the tears well up as I walk
For tonight I'm all alone tonight

Remembering those autumn days
But I am all alone tonight

Sadness lies in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon

I look up as I walk
So that the tears won't fall
Though the tears well up as I walk
For tonight I'm all alone

Damon & Naomi with Chris Marker

Damon & Naomi with Chris Marker - And You Are There

This song is about the way time can compress when you are lost in a memory, something I have learned a lot about from Chris Marker’s work – his films (La Jetée, Sans Soleil), his writing (Immemory), his photographs.

When the song was finished, I sent it to Chris with a note – since his work had provided inspiration for the song, I wondered, might he in turn have a visual response to it? He sent back this image, with the note:

“Dunno if it fits your pretty proustian melancholy, but I thought it could... And thanks for linking me to music, the only real art for me as you know (cinema? you kiddin’...)”

Penny & The Quarters - You And Me

Penny & The Quarters - You And Me

Nearly thirty years after the label closed its doors, a mysterious box of tapes turned up at an estate sale in Columbus, OH. Originally thought to be the lost Prix masters, it was instead discovered to be dozens of demos, rehearsals and a few finished songs recorded in Harmonic Sounds’ prime. The tape boxes were for the most part unmarked; creating a puzzle that would require some time to solve. Penny & the Quarters’ “You And Me” is a random rehearsal by a group no one can remember but, one more song we wouldn't let be forgotten.   (Numero Group)

"You And Me" was released by Numero Group and was later heard by actor Ryan Gosling, who recommended it to the director Derek Cianfrance as the song meant to bring the two lead characters together in Blue Valentine (邦題: ブルーバレンタイン. (Wiki)

"You and Me" b/w "Some Other Love" 45 is available on Numero Group.

Yellowbirds - The Rest Of My Life

Yellowbirds - The Rest Of My Life (animated collage video),
from the album "The Color."

Yellowbirds is the moniker for the latest musical exploits of Sam Cohen (guitarist, songwriter, vocalist in the psychedelic collective Apollo Sunshine).  Both songs appeared on his debut full length "The Color," available now on Royal Potato Family.

As existential lyrical themes emerge, delivered nonchalantly over psyched-out aural landscapes, the picture emerges of a dust-blown, 4th dimensional Future West. This is Cohen's (he grew up in Houston, Texas) quixotic world where "only the purist tones can be heard".

Yellowbirds are Sam Cohen and friends (Brian Geltner, Max Koepke, Neil Berenholz, Josh Kaufman, Wynne Bennett, George Lewis, Brian Kantor).

James Blackshaw - Untittled

James Blackshaw is a London-based guitarist, and more recently, pianist, born in 1981. Blackshaw primarily plays an acoustic 12 string guitar in a similar style to Jack Rose, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Robbie Basho. He has released material on labels such as Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, Static, Digitalis Industries, Important Records, and Tompkins Square. His music and skill has received much critical acclaim: "Blackshaw has finessed his 12-string acoustic guitar into a veritable solo symphony that's as schooled in uncommon beauty as it is in complex 20th century composition."
