Sonny Smith releases "One Act Plays" LP

Secret Seven Records, SF has released the 2005's self-released album by Sonny Smith (of Sonny & The Sunsets) "One Act Plays" on vinyl for the first time!

Sonny Smith - Troublesome Affair (from "One Act Plays")

Sonny Smith - Eddie And Rita (from "One Act Plays")

And Sonny & The Sunsets' new album "Longtime Companion" will be soon available on June 26th on their new label Polyvinyl Records.

"One Act Plays" CD (2005)
"The songs on One Act Plays started out as real one act plays written for the theater. But in writing them I began to make them songs at some point. I can’t remember when this mysterious shift happened........ I had a few influences at the time I was writing them. One was Terry Allen's Juarez, a concept record with recurring characters. Also I was really into Sam Shepard at the same time so I was reading a lot of his stuff. A few of the songs, like 'Eddie and Rita' even have some stage directions lifted directly from one of his plays. The song 'Following Father' took a bunch of facts from my dad's cousin, a Texan who always had some get rich quick scheme that never lasted. I was trying to make some kind of Tennessee Williams like thing apparently. Epic! Large! Family! Redemption! Well, anyway, most of these plays are fictional, except for 'Freaks In Space' and 'Honey Roy Rockwell'. Those two are the complete truth. The terrible truth." –Sonny Smith

Guests for "One Act Plays" are Neko Case, Edith Frost, Mark Eitzel, Rico Bell, Jolie Holland, Peggy Honeywell, Virgil Shaw, Eugene & Akire Chen, Andy Cabic, and John Dwyer.

Dylan Shearer - Afterwhile

Dylan Shearer - Afterwhile

Check out the opening track from the upcoming Dylan Shearer's second full length "Porchpuddles" and first for San Francisco's Empty Cellar records. Due out on June 19th, pre-order the LP, HERE

"Born in Lancaster, California, a small town surrounded by the Mojave Desert, this interpretation only makes sense. While bedroom pop is not a genre often equated with the desert, Dylan Shearers take on the style evokes a sense of loneliness and isolation only the vast open, seemingly endless nature of a desert can induce - all within the confines of a three-minute pop song mind you." --Empty Cellar records

"There is a new specter among us. Dylan Shearer's throaty baritone seems to have been borne on the slow-moving winds off some far-away coast. Plaintive and honest, his voice recalls Syd Barrett, Bill Fay, Skip Spence, and others whose words and melodies never seemed in a rush to get anywhere, yet always arrived fully formed in the listener's ear nonetheless." -- Tim Cohen

Foxygen "Take The Kids Off Broadway"

Foxygen - Make It Known

Jagjaguwar’s newest signee, Foxygen is the bi-coastal songwriting duo comprised of  Sam France (vocals, Olympia, Wash., 22 years old) and Jonathan Rado (guitar/keyboards, NYC, 22). Foxygen’s Jagjaguwar debut release, "Take The Kids Off Broadway" EP, is set to release on July 24th. Pre-order EP, HERE. Stream the EP in its entirety through their bandcamp. The EP was recorded in Astoria, Queens, NY on Tape and Computer, and mixed by Richard Swift (at National Freedom) and Sam & Rado (at Foxy HQ).

"They are the raw, de-Wes Andersonization of The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Velvets, Bowie, etc. that a whole mess of young people desperately need. They create a sometimes-impressionistic, sometimes-hyper-real portrait of sounds from specific places and times. Yet, it never comes across as anything but absolutely modern music. They bring the manic, freewheeling qualities of an artist like Ariel Pink to those aforementioned influences to make for one of the most refreshing listens of the year." --Jagjaguwar

Annette Peacock “I’m The One”

“I’m the one, you don’t have to look any further. I’m the one. I’m here, right here for you,” oozes jazz, rock, and electronic music pioneer Annette Peacock on the leadoff title track of her solo debut LP. The album’s wide range of vocal emotions and diverse sonic palette (featuring Robert Moog’s early modular synthesizers, which the singer actually transmitted her voice through to wild effect) places it firmly at the forefront of the pop avant-garde. Originally released by RCA Victor in 1972 to widespread critical acclaim, I’m The One found itself amongst good company. Both Lou Reed and David Bowie had recently signed to the label—Bowie in particular was enamored with Annette—and artists ranging from ex-husband and jazz great Paul Bley, along with notable Brazilian percussionists Airto Moreira and Dom Um Romao, guested on the album itself. Writing and arranging I’m The One’s nine passionate tracks—bar a unique cover of Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender”— the disc grooves easily from free jazz freak-outs and rough and rugged blues-funk to gently pulsing synthesized bliss. --Light In The Attic

“Heart, Soul and Talent, on the grandest levels. I love Carletta Sue Kay” —Christopher Owens, Girls

"Oh Michael, Look What You’ve Done : Friends Play Michael Chapman"

"Michael Chapman began his career on the Cornish folk circuit in 1967. Signed to the Harvest label, home to Pink Floyd and Deep Purple, he recorded four quasi-legendary albums. The influential ‘Fully Qualified Survivor’ was John Peel’s favorite record of 1970, and featured future Bowie collaborator Mick Ronson. After decades of recording and touring, Chapman remained an obscure figure in the States until his profile was raised by a lengthy 2009 interview with big fan Thurston Moore in Fretboard Journal. He toured extensively with the late guitarist Jack Rose, and more recently, with Bill Callahan. Seattle-based indie label Light in the Attic began a reissue campaign of his Harvest work, and Tompkins Square released the internationally acclaimed double disc, ‘Trainsong : Guitar Compositions, 1967-2010‘." --Tompkins Square Records

"Oh Michael, Look What You've Done : Friends Play Michael Chapman," compiled by Michael's wife Andru and Tompkins Square's Josh Rosenthal, is due out on May 29th via Tompkins Square.
