from the album "Music For Confluence"
Directors: Vernon Lott & Jennifer Anderson / Cinematography: Philip Bloom / Copyright: © 2011 Erased Tapes Records Ltd.

"I had been asked to make the score for a documentary film called Confluence. The film is based in the Lewiston, Idaho area, not too far from where I grew up in the USA, and it chronicles several mysterious cases of young girls found murdered or gone missing around 1980, all of which seem to lead back to one man who for a variety of reasons has not been able to be charged with these crimes."
– Peter Broderick

New-Berliner Peter Broderick has released "Music For Confluence," a film score album for the documentary "Confluence," directed by Jennifer Anderson and Vernon Lott.
It was preceded by the double A-side 7" single 'Old Time' b/w 'Solace In Gala,' songs from "Confluence" and the another documentary "Grace and Mercy," directed by Luis Peña, with a download of the full 14-track score entitled "Music For Grace And Mercy – a film of Haitians helping Haitians."

Available now on Erased Tapes Records.

Optigan Disc - VIBRASCAPE

New 2011 Optigan Disc - VIBRASCAPE
Now available for Optigan owners, pre-order >> HERE,
along with the three new Vako Orchestron discs: VIBRAPHONE, FLUTE & CELLO.

VIBRASCAPE presents the sound of the vibraphone in a uniquely Optigan fashion. The keyboard tones are arranged as a series of rhythmic patterns that create hypnotic, pulsating soundscapes when chords are played. (This disc is not particularly suited to melodic playing). The chord buttons feature sustained bowed vibraphone chords. The special effects switches help keep the groove going with a selection of rhythms from the Maestro Rhythm King MRK-2, an old-school beatbox and technological contemporary of the Optigan. Optigans equipped with a spring reverb will provide the most haunting sound, which is further enhanced by inserting the disc upside-down for backwards play.

Vibraphone played and recorded by Mark Greenberg (of The Coctails, The Mayfair Workshop) / Music produced, edited, and mastered by Pea Hicks (of Optiganally Yours, formerly of Tit Wrench and Lucas & Friend)

MELLODRAMA: Mellotron/Chamberlin Documentary Trailer

"Mellodrama," a documentary by Dianna Dilworth, explores the rising and falling fortunes of the Mellotron - the first musical keyboard to "sample" the sounds of other instruments - from its birth in a California garage in the 1950s, through its dominance on concert stages in the 1970s, through its almost religious cult of followers in the 2000s. From the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" to Black Sabbath to Kanye West, Mellodrama is a 50-year odyssey of musical invention, revolution, betrayal, and rediscovery.

The film features interviews with Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Mike Pinder (Moody Blues), Ian McDonald (King Crimson), Rod Argent (The Zombies), Jon Brion, Matthew Sweet, Michael Penn, Pea Hicks and many more.

Lambchop "Mr. M"

cover art: 'James E. Prudent, Jr.' by Kurt Wagner

"MR. M started in a painter’s studio in fact. Wagner explains. “As I worked, I was approached by Mark Nevers (former full time band member & producer for the likes of Andrew Bird and Will Oldham) with the idea of making another Lambchop record. He had a concept of a sound and a method that worked with the tone of my writing. His idea was a kind of ‘psycho-Sinatra’ sound, one that involved the arranging of strings and other sounds in a more open and yet complex way."

Lambchop - If Not I'll Just Die

Lambchop - Gone Tomorrow

Both tracks are taken from the forthcoming new full-length "Mr. M" by Kurt Wagner’s Lambchop, due out on February 20th, 2012 via City Slang (Europe) and February 21st via Merge (US).

The album was recorded at Mark Nevers’ Nashville Beech House studio, with Scott Martin (drums), Matt Swanson (bass), Ryan Norris (guitar, organ), Tony Crow (piano), William Tyler (guitar) and guests include Jonathan Marx (another ex-member of the band) and Cortney Tidwell. The strings were arranged by Peter Stopschinski and Mason Neely.

Misty Roses

"We’re a transatlantic duo – Jonny Perl and myself – who make glamorous, spooky music. We’re influenced by non-rock popular music from the latter half of the twentieth century, such as soundtracks, exotica and dub, and ‘middle-of-the-road mavericks’ like Scott Walker and Serge Gainsbourg."
An excerpt from Bizarre Magazine's interview with Robert Conroy (of Misty Roses):

Misty Roses - Villainess
taken from "Villainess" album (Frog Man Jake, 2009)

Misty Roses - Fantastic Voyage (David Bowie cover)
taken from the live sessions on Irene Trudel's WFMU radio show, 26 October 2009. Robert Conroy performed a cover of David Bowie's 'Fantastic Voyage,' with his friend Greg Fasolino (of Bell Hollow) on 12-string guitar, they were both in the band Burning Rome back in '86.

Misty Roses: Wichita Linemen from the Black Lagoon, on Dangerous Minds

A dark, cinematic, transatlantic pop combo, Misty Roses are Jonny Perl (from London, instruments/programming) and Robert Conroy (from New York, voices/words). Misty Roses' new 7″ vinyl, double A-side 'Puce Woman (for Kenneth Anger)' / 'Queen Cobra (for Jack Smith)' is out now via UK label, Exotic Pylon Records.

With a nod to the musical past, Misty Roses takes pop melodrama to modern heights. Their combination of electronic textures overlaid with a cinematic sense of musical storytelling reminds you somewhat of 60's icons like The Zombies and The Association.   -Irene Trudel  (via FMA)

James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg

James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg - The Queue Outside The Night Ministry

James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg: Believer Field by Nathan Salsburg
From "Avos," released on Tompkins Square in August, 2011. Recorded and mixed by Jonathan Schenke at Soungs, Chicago; mastered by Blaise Barton, Scientific Mastering, Chicago.

James Elkington moved from London to Chicago around the turn of the millennium and has since released a string of albums as leader of The Zincs for Thrill Jockey Records. After dissolving the band in 2008, Elkington has concentrated on acoustic, folk-tinged music with his band The Horse's Ha (that he shares with Freakwater's Janet Bean), culminating in the release of their debut album, "Of The Cathmawr Yards" in 2009. He is also the owner/operator of a clunky solo career, and moonlights convincingly as the guitar player in Jon Langford's (of The Mekons) Skull Orchard.

Nathan Salsburg - Sought & Hidden

Back Home In Bogenbrook by Nathan Salsburg
From "Affirmed," forthcoming on the No Quarter label, November 15, 2011. Recorded in Louisville, Kentucky, at the Funeral Home by Kevin Ratterman; mixed and mastered by Blaise Barton at Scientific Mastering in Chicago.

Nathan Salsburg was born in that Diamond City, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania—she of anthracite glimmer and Babe Ruth's 1926 long ball—and is a longtime resident of Louisville, Kentucky. He is a folklorist and a producer and presenter of traditional music for East Village Radio, the Drag City imprint Twos & Fews, and the Alan Lomax Archive, among other outlets. His first solo record is called Affirmed, and it's about race horses—Affirmed, Bold Ruler, and Eight Belles, specifically—and desire and reckonings of the spirit. It's an almost entirely instrumental affair, save his elegiac rendering of the traditional tune "The False True Love."
