Big Search "Lay Of The Land"

Big Search - We Know

Big Search - Flyer's Fall

Both tracks are taken from Matt Popieluch (of Foreign Born, Fool's Gold and Glaasser) aka Big Search's latest release "Lay Of The Land" album, out now on limited copies of vinyl and digital via St. Ives. He's also known as a sideman of Cass McCombs.

Matt Popieluch, frontman for Secrely Canadian artist Foreign Born, has been making music as Big Search since 1999. After making significant aesthetic breakthroughs in his dorm room at San Francisco State University, he embarked on a four-track recording spree that lasted the remainder of his collegiate experience, resulting in several 90-minute "albums" destined for the vacuum of obscurity. The first official Big Search album Mysticism vs. Classicism was recorded in Popeiluch's garage in a house he shared with Luke Top (Fool's Gold) and Jason Quever (Papercuts). This was the very same garage and time period in which Cass McCombs' A and Papercuts' Mocking Bird were recorded. In 2004, Popieluch formed Foreign Born with Lewis Pesacov (Fool's Gold) and moved to Los Angeles, where he played his first true shows at Big Search and Mysticism vs. Classicism saw limited release on Luke Top's short-lived label Grand Gallop. Hereupon, Lay of the Land began to take shape.

"Ya they might induce the sort of meditation we’ve come to expect from Stallones and his cohorts, but the genuine focus of these works lies in a sort of fetishized materiality: it’s just a Galaxie 8180 electronic organ and a five-piece drumset—odd timbres, distortions, broken keys, buzzing echoes and all. A dialogue vocal howls that flits in and out concretizes the intimacy of this musical space; while Stallones and Malkin are indeed wizards of levitated, shamanistic, and disembodied musical realities, here we see them straight on; two bros just letting shit out, warts and all."  (Goaty Tape)

Asthmatic Kitty Records presents the fifth Half-handed Cloud full-length album: As Stowaways in Cabinets of Surf, We Live-out in Our Members a Kind of Rebirth, or Stowaways for short. Connected with the lyrical tradition of 19th Century American hymns such as “Shall We Gather at the River?” “Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb?” and “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing,” these tunes splash about in cavernous spaces opened up by irregularly measured rhythms and pocket-orchestra arrangements integrated with creaky pianos, sound-loops, a tugboat of a church organ, guitars, and billowing banjos.

Half-handed Cloud’s John Ringhofer recorded this album on his half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine in the sanctuary and custodial quarters of a church in Berkeley, California, where he’s lived and worked as a custodian for the past seven years. He played most of the parts himself, joined by friends on cello, clarinet, violin, trumpet, and flute. Brandon Buckner, one-third of Ringhofer’s former band, Wookieback, is behind the drum-kit for the duration of this record. The album was mixed with Daniel Smith (Danielson) at Familyre Studio in Clarksboro, New Jersey.

How Mata Hari Lost Her Head and Found Her Body

"Bow to Shiva" dance scene with music by Julian Lynch
Shiva Dance Scene from Amy Ruhl's upcoming short movie, "How Mata Hari Lost Her Head and Found Her Body."  The film features 4 original songs composed by Julian Lynch, a soon-to-be score by Lawrence Bonk and Jesse Novak, and fabulous costumes hand-crafted by Vanessa Riegel.  Ruhl also directed a video for Lynch's song, "Seed."  See more videos and backgrounds of How Mata Hari at Amy Ruhl's vimeo page.  More about the film on Kickstarter page.

“How Mata Hari Lost Her Head and Found Her Body” is an imaginary biography of a very real historical figure: the Dutch exotic dancer who duped turn of the century Europeans with a thirst for Orientalism into believing she was a Javanese Priestess; the famous courtesan; and the alleged spy executed by firing squad for espionage in World War I.
