Sneak Peek into “Family Trees”

"Family Trees" Sampler Mix

HUSH Records has announced that the former ‘for Stars’ front man Carlos Forster releases his first solo album “Family Trees,” recorded with M Ward as producer / collaborator, the album will be released on July 19th. Pre-order is available, here.

Forster made five trips up to Portland between 2003 and 2009 in which he and Ward recorded Family Trees at Mike Coykendall’s Blue Rooms studio. The songs on the record are a mix of old and new: a few Ward adored (and was likely influenced by) from their days as students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (“Campfire Songs” in particular), and a few written during the recording process. Friend Rachel Blumberg (who played with M Ward, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, Mirah and Jolie Holland) stopped by to add drums. Jonathan Richman, who refused to speak after 6 p.m. — he wrote everything down on a piece of paper and handed it to you to read—added a noodly guitar track to “If I Could Be”. When he showed up he was holding a nylon string guitar and said, “I just want to play second rhythm guitar..... Tim Mooney (American Music Club) and Forster put the finishing touches on the record, mixing it in San Francisco at Mooney’s Closer Studio.”

Born in Taiwan, Alex Zhang Hungtai (aka Dirty Beaches) grew up in North America. His music brings back to life the forgotten stories of a wild America of the 1960s, stories imprinted on scorched hope.  Ela Orleans left her native Poland for Glasgow before settling in the vastness of New York. She takes us on a reverie of splendor and despair. This collection of pensive postcards from NYC is dedicated to night owls feeding on utopia and desolation.

Devon Williams "Euphoria"

He's traveled from punk rock roots to an enviable place where power-pop meets classic 60s melodies, the best of swirling 80s-flavored production and shimmering, jangling guitars. His brilliant debut solo album Carefree, released in 2008, demonstrated a knack for crafting timeless pop that’s equal parts Brill Building and Topanga Canyon. On it, Williams hearkened back to great songwriters like Nilsson, Chilton, Downes and Westerberg.

A blissful shimmering pop album "Euphoria" features 12 new songs, recorded and mixed in several studios by producers like Brooklyn's Jorge Elbrecht (of the Violens) and Vancouver’s Dave Carswell, who also produced The New Pornographers and Williams’ onetime touring mate, Destroyer.  He is also known for playing in (Vivian Girls) Katy Goodman's La Sera, previously the Lavender Diamond touring band.

Dolfish "Your Love Is Bummin' Me Out"

Dolfish - Your Love Is Bummin' Me Out

Dolfish is Max Sollisch. A fellow from Columbus, Ohio who writes sad, bitter, humorous country songs only to bang them out in two minutes or less in balls to the wall garage-rock fashion. It’s weird, we know, but it is completely bad ass. Since Dolfish’s inception in late 2010, he has shared the stage with Southeast Engine, The Gay Blades, David Dondero, Franz Nicolay, Sore Eros, Joe Pug and Strand of Oaks among others. His debut, Your Love is Bummin’ Me Out shreds through 5 tunes in just over 8 minutes and has called  “Country Music from 2030.” Comparisons range from Daniel Johnston to Robbie Fulks to The Mountain Goats to Guided by Voices, but he’s just trying to sound like Neil Young. Watch him closely, or he will come to your house and watch you.

Download Dolfish's EP for free via Afternoon Records, here.

Lucky Dragons - Heartbreaker

Lucky Dragons - Heartbreaker

taken from the "Dark Falcon" (555 Recordings, 2002), re-issued on vinyl from Marriage Records.  Based in Los Angeles, California, Lucky Dragons is an experimental music group consisting of Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara.

The Lucky Dragon [Fukuryu Maru] was the name of a Japanese tuna trawler which was caught in the fallout of the United States' hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll on March 1st, 1954. All 23 members of the boat's crew suffered the effects of radiation sickness after being rained on by ash from the explosion, 500 miles away. Once the boat itself had been determined free of dangerous radiation, it was painted entirely black and put out to sea again, still for use as a fishing vessel, but re-christened The Dark Falcon.  (from the original liner notes)

Les Chauds Lapins (“the hot rabbits”), lead by New York’s Kurt Hoffman and Meg Reichardt, specialize in a repertoire of French swing from the 1920’s through the 40’s. The group has re-arranged long-forgotten French classics for banjo-ukes, string trio, guitar and winds, mixing the rootsiness of early American jazz with the lushness of a Bernard Hermann film soundtrack.

"It's a song by Vincent Scotto, who wrote 10,000 songs, all hits, and was popularized by Alibert. It teeters between operetta charm and early jazz piquancy. Meg and Kurt both play banjo uke on this one. Special guest Frank London takes a trumpet solo."

A Short Film About Frank Fairfield

Exclusive Video Premiere: A Short Film About Frank Fairfield via IFC

The 25-year-old California musician Frank Fairfield has toured in support of Fleet Foxes and Cass McCombs, two bands at or near indie rock's recent crossover metastasis. But Fairfield doesn't approach the twisting folk-pop of Fleet Foxes or the elliptical escapades of Cass McCombs. Rather, Fairfield plays banjo, guitar, fiddle and, quite often, the floor with his feet as he stomps out the rhythm of American songs that sometimes date beyond the century mark. Fairfield is an old-time musician, a passionate and untiring searcher and syndicate of song. He finds his tunes on old 78s or from fellow travelers in the antediluvian world of oral tradition, and he reenergizes them with an enthusiasm and an earnestness that's very much about how these songs fit right now.
