"Emerging from rampant hedonism and isolation is II, the new album from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The musical vision of Portlander-via-New Zealand Ruban Nielson started as an anonymous home-recording project that fused psychedelia, soul, choppy percussion and funk. UMO came to life in basements and bedrooms after Nielson moved from his native New Zealand to Portland, Oregon with his family. Following the recruitment of bassist Jacob Portrait, new drummer Greg Rogove and a deal with Jagjaguwar, UMO toured the US with Grizzly Bear and Liars." --Jagjaguwar

MVD Visual released a DVD of The Point! on November 20, 2012, The Definitive Collector's Edition includes the animated film plus twenty-five minutes of bonus material including: Who Is Harry Nilsson?, Pitching the Point, Making the Point, and Legacy Of The Point.

Leapling - If You're Patient

Artwork by Jenny Brown

Leapling is a Brooklyn, NY-based is pop/experimental/rock quartet comprising Dan Arnes, Yoni David, R.J Gordon, Joey Postiglione, "Losing Face" EP is their first official debut via Father/Daughter Records.

Leapling - If You're Patient
taken from their latest 5-song EP "Losing Face" (out now via Father/ Daughter Records)

Leapling began as home recordings, written by singer/guitarist Dan Arnes over the course of several months. From there, Dan and drummer, Yoni David, edited the tracks down to what would ultimately become Losing Face and also assembled a live band, which includes bassist R.J. Gordon (who also mastered the EP) and Joey Postiglione on lead guitar. Aside from the addition of some drums and effects on "June," the EP is largely unchanged from those solo home recordings.

The project is fairly new to the scene but the players are not -- they are the hearts and minds behind the Bushwick DIY venue/art space Big Snow Buffalo Lodge and the artist collective known as American Buffalo Recordings. You'd be hard pressed to find a group of people more committed to the local music community than these four dudes. Since their inception in early 2012, Leapling has performed live with friends and comrades Twin Sister, Ava Luna, Each Other and Total Slacker.

Tim Maia was the man. A soul superstar with outsize talents and appetites, he revolutionized popular music in his native Brazil in the 1970s. He also married five times, served multiple prison sentences, and at the height of his fame, joined a UFO-obsessed religious cult. --Luaka Bop

Thee Oh Sees - "Lupine Dominus" (Official Music Video)

Lloyd Cole + H. J. Roedelius

The upcoming collaborative album "Selected Studies Vol. 1" between an english singer and songwriter, Lloyd Cole and a legendary figure in krautrock and avant-garde electronic music / founding member of Cluster and Harmonia, Hans-Joachim Roedelius is set to release on February 22nd, 2013 on CD, 180g vinyl (+ CD), and for download via Hamburg's Bureau B.

What a collaboration! The British singer-songwriter Lloyd Cole has always been a Cluster fan, especially of the 1976 LP "Sowiesoso". Cole released his own heavily Cluster-influenced album "Plastic Wood" in 2001. Roedelius liked it and, over the next decade, Cole and Roedelius considered working together from time to time, but never actually got around to it. It was not until 2011 when they finally met in Vienna that they could finally begin in earnest. The album reveals mature, carefully composed music, as if Cole and Roedelius had been working together for years already. Both artists focus on electronic sounds in a selection of succinct, direct pieces, free of musical garrulousness. Cole neither sings nor plays guitar and Roedelius rarely touches the keys of his grand piano. Instead, both musicians have developed a subtle soundscape which only drifts towards pure noise on one track. -- Bureau B
