MarchFourth Marching Band is a mobile big band spectacular, consisting of a 12-piece horn section (4 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets), a 10-piece drum/percussion corps, anchored by electric bass (battery powered).  It all began when a handful of artists and musicians in Portland, OR decided to put together a marching band for a Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras party on March 4th.  The sound is huge, melodic, and dynamic, taking audiences on a musical journey around the globe. MarchFourth writes and performs its own material, and also draws inspiration from an eclectic range of worldwide influences, such as Eastern European Gypsy Brass, Samba, Funk, Afro-Beat, Big-Band, Jazz, and Rock music, as well as television, film, circus, and Vaudeville.

Artists include, William T. Wiley, Mingering Mike, Chris Johanson, Reed Anderson, Jo Jackson, Harrell Fletcher, Chris Duncan, Tucker Nichols, Paul Wackers and 91 others!  Check out Sonny’s 100 Records blog.

Chris Johanson, courtesy of Gallery 16, San Francisco

"I didn’t intend to write so many songs. I had written a novel last winter about all these fictional musicians, and I got a small residency at the Headlands to write songs for these fake singers and make sketches of what their albums would look like. I thought that might be cool to insert in the novel. But I farmed a few drawings out — one to artist Paul Wackers, one to Mingering Mike [godfather of fake 45s], some to a few artists at Creativity Explored, and a few others to people I met through Headlands. The pieces were so amazing that I couldn’t not do that for all of the songs, and I couldn’t slack on the song-production end. So my novel just kinda broke up into this epic art project. Now there are about 60 artists, and I’m trying to do 200 songs. Marc Dantona has been helping me produce some sessions. We have a little wrecking crew band, and we are knocking shit out left and right. The “100 Records” show will be in April at Gallery 16."

DM Stith – Heavy Ghost Appendices

DM Stith's upcoming release, "Heavy Ghost Appendices" 2CDs collect last year's digital trilogy of EPs ("BMB," "Thanksgiving Moon" and "Braid of Voices") into a beautifully packaged limited edition double disc set. The EPs were an exercise in exploring the boundaries of the music contained on his 2009 debut album "Heavy Ghost," revisiting songs, reinterpreting, and displaying some inspiration and influences through covers of other artists. The Remixes helped provide new context and deconstruction of his songs in a way that unearthed the songs' roles and relationships to one another.  Out May 25th.  (Asthmatic Kitty)

Pearl Harbor - SXSW 2010 Cheer Up Charlies

One of the most anticipated day parties was the GorillaVsBear/Mexican Summer showcase at Klub Krucial, featuring bands The Golden Filter, Best Coast and Pearl Harbor. The Golden Filter settled into the groove nicely with hot electro-synth sounds and bombastic drumming.

Pearl Harbor, newcomers to the city of Austin, played a gorgeous set of California-dreaming pop songs, and guitarist Skylar Kaplan, now 16 years old, played with the confidence and swagger of a live-music veteran. Equally amazing was sister Piper Kaplan’s stage presence — sweet and dreamy, she hypnotized the audience into submission with sonically warm vocals and warmer smiles.

Bill Kirchen "Word To The Wise"

Bill Kirchen - Rowdy, Rollicking Guitar Pioneer and Commander Cody Alum, Poised for a Breakthrough with New All-Star Duet Album, 'Word to the Wise' (Proper American, May 25) ........ The "Titan of the Telecaster" Behind "Hot Rod Lincoln" is Joined by A-List Colleagues Including Paul Carrack, Commander Cody, Elvis Costello, Dan Hicks, Nick Lowe, Maria Muldaur, and others.

"Word to the Wise" includes masterpieces old and new, such as Roger Miller's classic "Husbands and Wives," a new Dan Hicks/Bill Kirchen co-write (the title track, "Word to the Wise,") and Kirchen's powerful rocker, "Man in the Bottom of the Well," sung unforgettably by Elvis Costello. Also, "Word to the Wise" features a new classic with Commander Cody on piano: "I Don't Work That Cheap" is a surrealistic romp through history that recalls the psychedelic spirit of Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues," concluding with the memorable line, "You can't pay me what I'm worth - I don't work that cheap."  Justly famous for his indelible Telecaster sound on "Hot Rod Lincoln," his 1972 Top 10 hit with Commander Cody, Bill Kirchen has been everywhere over the span of a 40-plus-year career: he was a founding member of the legendary Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen; he released eight critically acclaimed solo albums; he toured internationally with Nick Lowe and has performed with the likes of Doug Sahm, Gene Vincent, Elvis Costello, Dan Hicks, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby and Link Wray.

The album, produced and recorded by Paul Riley at Specific Sound, London, includes the tracks:

Bump Wood
Shelly's Winter Love (with Nick Lowe and Paul Carrack)
Man in the Bottom of the Well (with Elvis Costello)
I Don't Work That Cheap (with Commander Cody on piano)
Time Will Tell The Story
Husbands And Wives (with Chris O'Connell)
Open Range (with Kevin "Blackie" Farrell)

Word To The Wise (with Dan Hicks)
Ain't Got Time For The Blues (with Maria Muldaur)
Valley Of The Moon (with Norton Buffalo on harmonica)

"JIM GUTHRIE has left an indelible mark on the Canadian music scene, from his early days as a home-rock DJ in Guelph, to his searing lead guitar in ROYAL CITY, ISLANDS, and HUMAN HIGHWAY. But his solo career is outstanding; every musician I know is indebted to him, especially me.  Working on Now More Than Ever with Jim, the band, and Andy Magoffin, none of us really understood the scope of it until it was released to great acclaim in Canada and beyond.  Jim’s songs are as cryptic as a crossword and as personal as a foot massage.  This record changed our lives, may it now change yours."
